November Is TMJ Awareness Month
As many of our patients prepare for Thanksgiving and the upcoming holiday season, November is also a time to recognize TMJ Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to raising awareness about the TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and TMD (temporomandibular joint disorder). The temporomandibular joint is the ball-and-socket joint that connects the lower jaw to the base of the skull. You can feel this joint by placing your fingers in front of your earlobes and opening your mouth. TMJ and TMD are often used interchangeably, even though TMD specifically refers to disorders of the temporomandibular joint.
One of the biggest concerns with TMJ is that it often goes undiagnosed. Many people experience symptoms that mimic other conditions, leading to frustration when they visit a medical professional and are told nothing is wrong. It can be disheartening to have symptoms without clear answers.
Symptoms of TMJ
Around 10 million Americans suffer from some form of TMD. Given how common this condition is, it’s important to recognize the symptoms so you can seek help if needed. Common TMJ symptoms include:
- Jaw pain and discomfort
- Face, back, or neck pain
- Frequent headaches
- Earaches or ringing in the ears
- Lockjaw
- Clicking or popping of the jaw
